~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
From the perspective of Mark's youngest,
Alexandra "Sam" Williams:
I've known Mark for 25 years,
who had been battling early onset dementia
since my earliest memories of him.
No longer did he golf, hunt, or even work.
The Mark I knew was a caretaker, a prankster,
and a father.
You can tell a lot about Mark by his wallet.
As a kid, it always held band aids
because I was bound to scrape a
knee every playground trip.
It held a well loved stack of photos of his family.
Every photo has curled edges and
discoloration from years of use.
Mark taught me the value of education,
teaching me math skills before
I learned them in school so I could stay ahead.
He taught me, and every kid at my daycare,
how to fish.
He taught me to love nature,
and how to nurture a garden
so that I could always be surrounded by nature.
He didn't like to show affection,
but he took school projects, photo albums,
and essays I wrote to brag to his
friends about his daughter.
The last thing I gave Mark was a
recent essay for my graduate program,
and before I could leave, he was
already halfway through reading it.
I wish he could have stayed a
bit longer to be able to brag
about my future MSW degree,
and to show off wedding pictures
to his buddies when I get married.
Though he won't be there in person,
I know he'll be with me — in every milestone,
every achievement, and every joyful moment
I wish I could share with him.
I will carry him with me always.
